Since
the dawn of time plants have been our sacred connection to Gaia,
our mother earth. Plants feed, cure and shelter us, and
legends abound of the power of chosen plants to heal and protect
the wise. Archeological evidence has established ritual
use of plants dating back 60,000 years. Throughout the world
people have gathered herbs and spices, resin and roots to offer
to the spirit world.
Rich in
abundance and diversity of aromatic botanicals, the western deserts
and Rocky Mountains echo fragrances of an ancient time, evoking
memories of a distant past. native tradition relate wherever
sage or cedar are, no evil influences may enter.
To
smudge is to purify with smoke from certain sacred herbs.
The sacred ritual of purifying with smoke comes from the native
peoples in both North and South America. In North America
the smoke is created by burning sacred herbs such as Sage, Cedar,
Sweetgrass and Juniper. In Mexico and Central America, Copal,
a resin derived from the copal tree, is used widely in ritual.

A Traditional
Prayer of Thanks
We
return thanks to our mother, the earth, which sustains us. We
return thanks to the rivers and streams, which supply us with water.
We return thanks to all herbs, which furnish medicines for the cure
of our diseases. We return thanks to the corn, and to her sisters, the
beans and squashes, which give us life. We return thanks to the
bushes and trees, which provide us with fruit. We return thanks
to the wind, which, moving the air, has banished diseases. We
return thanks to the moon and stars, which have given to us their light
when the sun has gone. We return thanks to our grandfather He-no,
that he has protected his grandchildren and has given to us his rain.
We return thanks to the sun, that he has looked upon the earth with
a beneficent eye. Lastly, we return thanks to the Great Spirit,
in whom is embodied all goodness, and who directs all things for the
good of her children.

Mixing up your own incense?
-
A Braun coffee grinder will work as a resin grinder. It will poop out
eventually, but at $20 it is much cheaper than the larger herb grinders
made for the task. Forget about using it to grind roots or woods,
though.
-
Sugar makes for extra smoke and sweetens incense; honey works well for
this and as a binder (bees are a Mars insect).
-
Bits of dried fruit soaked in a bit of wine to plump them and make them
easier to mash are nice for binding powdered resins--they contain sugar
as well as a scent of their own and are especially good for Venus
blends. Wine is also Venus, although you might consider it Dionysian.
When working with labdanum, heating it slightly will make it runny, and
you can also try pouring it onto wax paper and putting it into the
freezer. You can then take it out and crack it apart if you work
quickly. To get labdanum or storax off your hands, try Orange Goop. You
can get them off glass with any oil.

Aromatic
Incense Resins

A natural
source of concentrated fragrance for body oils, and offerings to the gods.
Traditionally
burned on charcoal in a ceramic bowl for the pleasant and meditative quality
of their fragrance.
|

|
- Resin
from the Burseru, a large plant family that extends throughout various
climates and ecozones, often with aromatic resins.
Breuzinho resin comes from a tree in the Amazon rainforest. A gum-like
substance is produced by the tree and forms on the trunk; as it gets
hard, the lumps gradually fall of or are picked off the tree and
gathered to make the resin.
-
When the resin is burnt, it produces a sweet floral fragrance. The scent
is very relaxing and calming, so is ideal to have around if you're
feeling stressed, anxious or worried. Many people use it as an
accompaniment to contemplative activities, such as meditation or
relaxation exercises. Historically, the Indians have used the
resin in shamanic practices and rituals. They also commonly burn it in
homes to produce a healthy atmosphere.
-
Comes in a
1/2 ounce tin.

the trees. Resin comes from these marks, is collected, heated
and poured onto a banana leaf to make a flat loaf shape.

Pinon resin comes from the pinon pine tree, the state tree of New
Mexico. The trees typically grow to between 12 and 30 feet tall.
-
Pinon resin produces a fresh and pleasant pine scent that will whisk
your imagination away to pine forests. The scent is cleansing,
refreshing, strengthening and warming, and can be effectively used to
purify rooms within the home, workplace or healing centre. It's very
refreshing, being able to revive people worn out after a long and tiring

Frankincense seeps from cuts in the Boswellia Sacra tree, which

worth its weight in gold in ancient times.

Benzoin (Styrax benzoin)
Benzoin is a balsamic resin. The trunk of the tree is hacked with an
axe, and after a time the liquid Benzoin either accumulates beneath the
bark or exudes from the incisions. When it has sufficiently hardened it
is collected and exported, either in the form of loose pieces (tears) or
in masses packed in oblong boxes or in tins; several varieties are
known, but Sumatra Benzoins are the most important. The incisions
are made when the tree is seven years old, and in Sumatra each tree
yields about 3 lb.
-
Sumatra Benzoin is always in blocks of a dull
reddish or grayish-brown color. Fine qualities have a strong storax-like
odor, quite distinct from the vanilla odor of the Siamese variety.
Sumatra Benzoin contains cinnamic acid.

Sold by the ounce.

- The balsam fir is a
small to medium sized evergreen tree that can grow up to 40 to 80 feet
tall. It can live for a maximum of 200 years and is found in many parts
of northeastern North America. The needles of the fir are flat, about 1-
inches long, rounded at the tip and normally curvy. They're a dark green
colour on top and usually white-ish underneath.
- The needles have a
pungent and refreshing aroma that arouses the senses and brings to mind
a walk in the forest. The scent is lovely enjoyed on its own, and
putting bundles of balsam needles in bowls in the house serves this
purpose really well, but they can also be added to incense and burned
during meditation, ceremonies or sacred space cleansing.
- The tree is said to
have helped Native American communities survive the winter, as it was
particularly prized for its medicinal purposes.

Hemisphere. On average, it's four to six feet high and tends to grow in
limestone soil.
-
It's
been traditionally used by many cultures to create a safe and sacred
environment, and ward off negative influences. Native Americans use
juniper leaves during sweat lodge ceremonies, where they were added to
the hot rocks to release their delicate scent. The leaves were also used
during many ceremonies to rid the area of any negativity and bring forth
a positive and healing air.

peoples carry the root of the osha plant (ligusticum poteri) because it

Osha is associated with dreaming and helps you to realise that there is
magic in everything, including you.
- It helps to lift a
veil between the conscious and unconscious worlds.
- Osha is a powerful,
spicy-smelling root that may be sprinkled onto the rocks in a sweat

- One of the
oldest incense materials, Sandalwood has been in use for at least 4,000
years. Sandalwood is a very important ingredient in Japanese incense, in
both traditional and modern formulas.
- Trade in sandalwood
dates back to the beginning of trading in India. Realizing its
value, the Sultan of Mysore declared it a
royal tree in 1792. It continues to retain that place today and no
individual may own a sandalwood tree. Even if the tree grows on
private land it is owned by the government. Today, the Mysore forests
are virtually depleted and the remaining trees too immature to produce
quality Sandalwood or Sandalwood oil. The highest quality Sandalwood is
coming out of Tamil Nadu where more mature trees can be found.
- Sandalwood has a
woody, sweet exotic aroma that combines will with frankincense, geranium
and jasmine. It is best used to create a warm, relaxing
atmosphere. It has been found to be an effective immune system
booster, and can be used to relieve anxiety, fatigue, stress and nervous
tension.

Americans, particularly during ceremonial purposes. When burned on hot
coals in sweat lodge sessions, they release a purifying scent.
-
Used in incense, the pine needles have a distinctive clean and sweet
smell that resonates with a feeling of being out in a natural wooded
area. The scent can refresh the body, mind and spirit, clear the head
and aid the release of a bleak outlook.

- This
hard to find spirit medicine is traditionally considered a relative of the four winds.
Kinship to the spirits of the air aids in communication and prayer.
Willows are regarded by Native Americans as being relatives of the four
winds, as the seeds are carried wildly by the wind in four directions. A
secondary relation is to the water, as they're often found growing by
streams. The spirit of the tree is thought of as versatile and mutable
and, not surprisingly, the main way they used red willow bark in their
life and ceremonies is in relation to air and water.
-
For example, Hopi and Navajo clans used willow to make prayer sticks and
amulets, whilst others used the plant to make water carriers, arrow
shafts or emblems of the four winds.
-
The bark works well in incense and was an important ingredient in sacred
smoking ceremonies. It's calming and soothing, making it an ideal herb
for use with clearing purposes and during quiet sessions of meditation.

for its ability to ward off negativity and provide an element of
protection. The leaves were often carried by individuals to boost their
spiritual strength and, in incense form; it's still used today in a
