Sex, Gender & Identity Politics

In the coming weeks we will be offering a selection of books, reference materials and original essays pertaining to the issue of Sex, Gender and Identity Politics.

We welcome your suggestions and will be happy to review your submissions for publication on this website.

We currently have a list of resources for the gay, intersex and trans communities posted for your convenience.  This will be updated in the future to include links to news, conferences and calls for papers.  There are also links to academic papers on issues of sex, gender or identity politics.  Read and learn, but please don't republish any of these articles without first receiving permission from the author(s).

Sundance Channel's new groundbreaking series TransGeneration.

Transgeneration is a spellbinding, intimate documentary that follows
four transgendered college students while they cope with the
challenges of school, campus life and family while they transition
their sex. Gabbie, Lucas, Raci and T.J. are students on different
campuses across the nation -- two transitioning from female to male
and two transitioning from male to female who are defining who
they are and taking control of their gender identity. With testimony
from their friends, classmates and families, the film boldly
illustrates the growing movement toward new definitions of sexuality
and gender identities.

INTERSEX

Intersex conditions have many causes-including genetic abnormalities or prenatal exposure to hormones-and manifest in a variety of ways. In some cases, intersexed individuals are clearly male or female in appearance, and their condition is not identified until puberty or adulthood. Some men with Klinefelter's syndrome, a genetic variation in which men are born with an extra X chromosome in addition to the standard XY, may not become aware of the syndrome until they discover their infertility in adulthood. Individuals with androgen insensitivity syndrome (AIS) are genetically male (they have XY chromosomes and testes), but their androgen receptors are not responsive to male hormones, and they develop female bodies. Sometimes AIS isn't identified until a young woman reaches the age of puberty without menstruating. Women with MRKH syndrome are genetically female (they have XX chromosomes), but are born without a vagina, uterus, and fallopian tubes, a fact they may not discover until becoming sexually active. New book! How fabulous!

Getting Bi: Voices of Bisexuals Around the World (order online)

"Many non-bisexual people think of bisexuality as a split experience of the self. They think of a bisexual as sometimes gay or lesbian (with a side serve of heterosexism) and sometimes straight (with a side serve of heterosexual privilege) by turns. They imagine her sense of herself is split into two pieces. Sometimes she plays for one team, and sometimes on the other. Sometimes she's on the right side, sometimes she's a traitor. But either way, she is not to be trusted. In popular culture, lesbians claim women who engage in sex with people of both sexes as lesbian if they are well behaved. If they are badly behaved, they are identified as evil bisexual women. Definitely not lesbians.

But the life writings of bisexual people do not reflect this picture of an unavoidably fractured identity. Bisexual people often experience the decision to adopt identity as naming the entirety of their experience as a unified whole. Many of us experience choosing bisexual identity as a homecoming. It allows us to name feelings, experiences, and self-understandings as part of a whole, rather than demanding that we attempt to understand ourselves or explain ourselves to others as sometimes one thing and sometimes another. In a sense, it is a choice in the direction of unification, exactly the opposite of being split."
